Dac:
* Doesn't void player warranty
* Can compare/shop various dacs to see which works best with player
* Possibly less $$ than mod, no flames...now always less $$
* Affects ONLY redbook play
Modding:
* Improves SACD AND redbook quality; may improve mch quality if mod specifies mch modding
* Not realistically reversible (i,e can't try it before you commit)
* much more holistic than dac; nothing says you can't dac AFTER mod, but most find they don't need to
* usually requires giving up player for specified period of time
My $.02, if you are truly happy with SACD output, then try a dac or two and see. Modding is more permananent, but will improve entire player performance. There are enough mod reviews and networks of modded users feedback to reduce risks.
