The Marantz may be limited in its CD playback, even with mods. The only modded DAC that I have found that actually delivers on CD's is the Shanling, but I have not modded the Marantz. Better to get the digital output modded on the Marantz so it is a superb transport and then pick out a modded DAC that you like. This is the only way to get the "magic" out of CD's IMO. It is more costly though.
