I just got a Marantz DR700 for recording cd's. It's going to be fed by my beloved Rotel RCD-855, which I had planned to keep as the cdp in my second system. Out of curiosity, I hooked up the Marantz and stuck in a cd. Surprise! It seems to best the Rotel for playback, and the Rotel has some decent tweaks on it. The Marantz seems to have a bit better detail overall, and the bass seems a little more extended on it. I didn't think a cdr would sound nearly as good. The amps are Wave 8s, fed by a Creek OBH-12 passive pre. My apologies to Marantz, which has much sexier cosmetics than the modest Rotel. Now the lesser of two evils part. The Marantz is in my second system, which sits on my desk to the left of the computer. Obviously, it's not in an audio rack. The Marantz and Rotel need to be stacked, or I might be able to rig up a shelf for one of them to sit on. So both of them would still be stacked but each would have a separate shelf. The shelf I build would be very modest, just pine or particle board. Would I gain that much from a shelf, or could one player act as a weight when stacked as another? Remember, I'm acknowledging that the setup is far from ideal, but the second system just makes nice sounds while I'm surfing the net or working at my desk. It's just fine for what it does.
Any thoughts/opinions are appreciated. Thanks
