I'm intending this to be my last redbook DAC. However, as we all know, the road to hell is paved with good intentions :-/ I agree that the 3.1x with the right cabling and a bit of tube rolling is fabulous in its own right, and better than most vinyl setups (for suitable values of "better", of course).As far as price comparisons go, the Signature version of the 4.1x is about $12K more than the 3.1x (about 3 times its price). That makes it pretty darned hard to justify in the face of competing financial priorities.
Your point about buying CDs is well taken. I've always believed that the sign of a music lover was that the cost of their software equalled the cost of their hardware. By that measure I'm going to die a gearhead...
