Today I brought home a Sony 9000 ES. The CD player on this is better IMO than on the 8260. The disc I used to compare was the Blood, Sweat and Tears CD on Sony. This CD is cut hot in the hf!I could not stand to listen to it on the 8260 with Classe amps and Van Schweikert speakers! On the Sony 600 with Mac amps and Mac speakers or the 9000 with my Music Reference and Music Fidelity amps and RDL speakers, it is listenable, even enjoyable. Just home without adjusting the hf filter or turning off the video or display on the 9000ES. When I get the hang of this complex player, I'm hoping for even better performance.
That said, the Sonys I've heard have a bit of a thin sound on CD. Midbass or midrange is a bit depressed I'd guess. Denon and McIntosh players I've heard have a bit fuller sound, although, not as good a resolution of details and transient response. Are we always faced with some compromise?
