Marantz CD-16 D

Hi all; my first digital post on AA is a question about my CD-16 D.
The guy I bought it from -it's ±4,5 years old- claims that it's actually a sort of CD-14 prototype. It does look EXACTLY identical to a CD-14, and has the whole copper-plated Ishiwata-thing going on inside-out. It certainly sounds VERY impressive, approaching my analogue set-up very closely.

Anyone know more about the role the CD-16 D played in the Marantz-line?
