In that price range, I listened to :- Marantz CD-67SE : very bad
- Used CAL Icon II (+-$400) : a lot better, but not perfectly neutral
with classical musicI read very good reviews about the Sony XA-20ES and the Pioneer PLD-65 (used +-$350).
Try to listen before to buy, with identical speakers, and CDs you know well. Good luck,
