Re: "Classic Cd Players"

in the early years - i remember a magnavox cdp that everybody was moding and raving about. I thought it still sucked - but was real popular at the time.

I think the Linn Cd12 and the Naim CDS were two players that both pushed the redbook digital envelope - actually exceding people expectations of how good redbook could really sound. When i first heard the CD12 - i was shocked - because after hearing most of the 'high-enders' i had already convinced myself that redbook had reached it's peak performance. It was a learning experience!!

The ML39 - esp because of it's HDCD - was a bit of a revelation at the time.

The Rega planet was maybe the first sub 1k player that had some kind of 'flow' and did not sound overly digital. However compared to todays players it lacks detail - big time!!!

I also think that the Arcam series (esp the 9) was a bit of an classic player(s) - and maybe the first 'upgradable' units.

The marantz models were all very capable. The cheaper units like the 63 or 50 models easily sounded better than the competition. The marantz (and early rotels) units forced cheaper players to be better. The cd7 was also one of the first high-end players to justify the money (at that time).
