Re: Chose of used CD Player at $500?

If you find one, the Ultech UCD-100 is a good buy, usually offered for $450 or less. Very high build quality, was "B" rated by Stereophile and included HDCD. Some early units had fatal logic failures, but the problem showed up within less than a year of purchase. Mine is 4 years old and going strong.

The sound is very delicate and transparent -- not harsh or unpleasant.

Negatives: bass transients softened a bit.

Only disadvantage is lack of a digital output.
