I think I already e-mailed this response to you, but just in case, here goes again. I used to have a Marantz CD63SE for use as a transport with my MSB Link DAC and I bought a Pioneer 525 DVD player to replace it. Before selling the Marantz, I had time to compare them and I would have to say that the difference between them was not significant. The Marantz sounded better - tighter, deeper bass and better resolution, but the difference was slight.I have since sold the Marantz and heavily modified the 525, power supply, damping, etc. and I would say with confidence now, that the 525 is far better than the Marantz.
Each to his own, but for the price of the Pioneer 525, you can hardly go wrong and to modify it to perform very well as a transport is relatively inexpensive and not very difficult. There are not a lot of 24/96 CD's out there, but they do sound good.
