Re: Digital Dilema: Get a Linn CD-12 ?

hi ARL,

as a Linn CD-12 owner i have heard most of the contenders out there and still prefer my CD-12. it has a clarity and ease that is unmatched in any 16/44 machine to my ears, without the colorations that less refined solutions use to eliminate the 16/44 edge.

the only digital i have heard that is better is my Marantz SA-1 playing sacds. and then only in resolution; the presentation of the Linn is very similar to the Marantz.

if Norm is referring to the upcoming Linn sacd player...... i have it on good authority (from the #1 u.s. Linn salesperson) that it will be a $6000 to $7000 universal player and will include DVD-V and DVD-A. this would NOT be a CD-12 killer IMHO.

i am sure there are other 16/44 solutions that are state-of-the-art. but for my money the best is the Linn CD-12. one other point i might make; i have noticed that in digital, a one-box solution seems to always outperform any transport/dac combination especially in the "emotion" and "musical content" areas. i am not talking coloration but simply naturalness. my opinion is that jitter and it's effects are a huge unsolved problem for 2-box digital solutions.
