The marantz is a fine player in it's price range. You would need to spend much more to get better sound, but a arcam, linn, cary, naim, rega, amoungst others, would certainly be an improvement.
AFAIC - the only way to see(hear) if a dac works is to home audition it or take your cdp to the store and try several dacs. With transports & dacs, synergy is important and therefore auditioning them is a must.
