Marantz CC 65 SE digital output

I own the Marantz CD changer and run it via the coaxial digital output into my CAL CL-15. When I use this changer as a transport, the CAL will not decode HDCD's. This has not happened with other changers. Moreover, unlike other changers, I can actually control the volume of the Marantz's digital output (i.e., it is a variable digital output). Is this normal? Anyone else with this or another CD player who can comment on the strange things going on with my digital output?
