RE: "a musical, engaging sound"

I agree with the recommendation for a Marantz player. I have a CD-5004 that I use for headphone listening (the built-in amp is decent, and later models in that series are supposed to be improved. The sound is on the warm side, as it was in the Marantz CD-63SE II that I had previously. The only down side is that the remote doesn't control the volume of the headphone output; you have to use the control on the front of the player.

The Marantz players have digital outputs, so you could always add an inexpensive headphone DAC/amp such as one of the Topping or SMSL models if you want something more detailed.
