RE: backwards compatibility of SACD players?

My advice is the same as Abe's, don't spend that kind of money. If anything buy a good DAC that can handle whatever you throw at it, and that would include streaming sources. SACD is long dead, but DSD is still crawling along with some specialty offerings from a very few vendors.

I get 20-30 new hi-res albums every week via Qobuz, and that is brand new files, they have thousands of older ones already available. For that I pay $15/month. It'll take a long time to reach $4k spent. Again, buy a decent DAC but spend some on a streaming setup (your computer is already sufficient btw as a first source) and just subscribe for however many years with the rest of your cash.
