You might look at the Cambridge Audio 841, it has a transport but is a DAC that includes volume control to be used a preamp if desired. It is full featured and has the type of sound you described. There are good reviews out on this unit. I've also heard that Onkyo Reference piece, it's "crisp" as well but the Cambridge would be a better bang for the dollar IMO.
It was surpriseing to me that you had all Marantz based on the type of sound you are looking for. Marantz is good but most people like them for the more warm involving nature. A guy I know recently replaced his 8001 with the Sony XA-5400es. I have not heard this unit but seems to be well reviewed and you can have the 5400 modded with an external clocking unit, I believe the Positive Feedback review had the modded unit.
If you like what Marantz is delivering stick with what you know but if wanting something different maybe buy from a retailer that allows returns. That shouldn't be hard on the Cambridge or Sony unit.
