I had a CD-67se, which was a big improvement over the cheapie Hitachi player that was my first CD player. But when the remote stopped working, I bought a Marantz CD-5004, which has much better audio than the 67se that it replaced--much more clarity and detail, tighter bass. So I would have to disagree that digital hasn't progressed much since the cd-63se (a model that preceded my CD-67se). Each of the Marantz players I bought was about $400. If you're on a budget and you want SACD capacity, too, consider the Marantz SA-5004.
I also have a Denon universal player (DVD-3109)which was $1500 new and now sells used for around $350--the sound of CDs is comparable to the newer Marantz player that I own. The Denon is a solidly built unit that is quite reliable.
