Your dilemma has mirrored my own.
I too find playing music from a hard drive or network to be extremely challenging and aggravating. My hard drive just crashed!!
I like the convenience of being able to pop in a disc and hit play. I like the convenience of being able to read liner notes without trawiling the internet for metadata.
My theory on disc players is that they will probably be around as long as people still have discs to play...I don't see them becoming unavailable any time soon. Same with discs...some people just prefer them...so they will probably continue to be made as long as there are people buying them.
As a vinyl lover I think you would be far happier with the sound of SACD than CD. SACD has an analog-like quality. I think that it makes sense to invest in SACD, even at this late stage of the game when all the major record labels have abandoned the format.
Audiophile labels like Analogue Productions and Mobile Fidelity continue to put out a steady stream of good product (mostly reissues), while many small boutique labels supply a steady stream of new recordings.
Moreover, we continue to get a steady stream of audiophile SACDs coming from Japan. There is so much new stuff coming so steadily that I could spend the next 10 years collecting it.
I think SACD makes sense for music lovers who are not ready to move into the virtual world of files, hard drives and clouds.
I don't think you have to spend mega-bucks on disc players either as many of the best seem to be reasonably priced and well within your budget.
