I am also looking for my last CD player. My concern is that mainstream players seem to be disappearing from the market, and at some point I think the only ones available may be reduced to the limited production expensive "audiophile" models. I would like to avoid that type of unit as they are very expensive, and the performance/quality seems to be highly variable.
But back to your question, the model you are interested was on my short list. I believe it is a good one. In the end the one that interests me the most is the Marantz CD-6004. What got my attention was the review at the link below of the CD-5004 model. The performance rivals the high end models. In particular have a look at the jitter compared to other good models such as the Bryston.
The CD-6004 uses a slightly higher end Cirrus Logic IC, and has some other minor improvements, so I would expect performance of it compared to the CD-5004 should be equal or better.
The Onkyo DX-7555 was on my list too, but it does not seem to measure up to the Marantz. Check out the reviews at Stereophile.
