Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Best "old" redbook DAC?

I would like to start using my Mac G5 tower as an audio source.
It features an optical digital output; i don't know what's the maximum sampling rate covered but i'd say i'm happy enough with (good quality) redbook format.
Seeing that most people now want 24/96Khz dacs with USB and I don't need any of that, what would be the possible used choices of DACs from, say, the 90's, that would provide me high quality conversion of redbook files?

...or is it better to go USB and asynchronous?
