Parsifal Encore (now replaced by a new version, Parsifal Ovation) is usually sold as a two-piece system: a bass module and a mid-high monitor sitting on top of it. It was originally developed as a small 2-way monitor however, for field-recording sessions. Verity Audio sells the top portion as a stand-alone product. It goes down to 55Hz on its own without the bass module and the price is less than a half of the whole system. It is revealing, transparent and capable of unusually high SPL. Although the overall tone is on the warm side and free from listening fatigue (a prerequisite for a pro monitor) it is still a serious, no-fun all-business kind of speaker. To describe it with two words: "surgical precision." In short, I don't think Quad CDP-2 is going to be a problem with most 2-way monitors, unless you share the same personal taste with me. Which is elaborated below:
Quad 99 CDP-2 is a better player than many sub-$1500 players, including some SACD/universal players. I compared it head-to-head with Pioneer Elite PD-D6-J and Rega Apollo. Quad came out by a big margin ahead of Pioneer; and by a smaller gap ahead of Rega. Its sonic traits are - in addition to the usual praises - 1) lively, engaging sound full of life 2) good drive and weight 3) silky and refined top-end. I perceive that the cdp has two particularities: first, somewhat under-damped bass of which the Stereophile review mentions. (But that's actually quite pleasant.) Second, that mid-high emphasis. It is not a tilt of overall tonal balance but an emphasis that rides on the leading-edge of transients. Some may consider this as a positive trait that enhances what the Brits call "PRaT." It certainly enhances the contrast and definition of sound-images. I've listened to a couple of sub-$2K Naim players that gave me a similar impression.
I can't stand it. But then, I can't stand a lot of CD players.
About QuadLink: QuadLink is a cabling system that provides both signal transfer and communication link between the 99-series equipments. With it, the 909 power amp goes into standby when the user turns off the 99 Pre - and some such similar system integration conveniences. I find that QuadLink, although convenient, compromises the sound of the Quad system. It sounds worse than even entry-level unbalanced RCA cables (e.g. Kimber PBJ.) Search the net and you'll find many similar reports.
I hope my explanation be helpful.
