Nice assessment of Marantz players. I have been leaning that way myself, for the same reasons as you and "tinos" describes.

I have passed up the DV9600 and SA8001 because I wasn't sure. I have not heard Marantz, because I can't where I live. I always imagined Marantz lacking detail and having smooth-itis, with no real resolution. Am I wrong?

Finally, does the DV7001 make to many compromises because it is an $800 universal player. It would be nice to combine cd and dvd.
