Now that you mentioned it; what is it about this hobby that attracts so many people who 'need to loosen their sphincter'? :-)) It seems to be an area that attracts so many pompous prigs. Always wondered about that aspect.

If sony's are TDK's and TY's then why not just buy those?

By the way, I manually finalized and it still wouldn't work. It did the exact same thing it did on 'make cd' auto mode. The readout says finalizing, then begins the countdown from app. 2:11 minutes (2:11 being how long it takes to finalize) but instead of just completing the finalization, when it gets down to 1:54 the readout changes to 4:11 (or so) remaining, it counts down a few seconds and then stops. If I press eject the readout displays 'not finalized' and the disc won't play. Oddly however, it WILL play back on the cdrecorder itself.

All the verbatim discs start finalizing at 2:11 and complete the process without a hitch. i am going to buy a TDK, Sony, fuji,.....and a few other singles and test them because I'm hoping to find a better brand then verbatim. Not that the verbatims are bad, but just that i'd imagine yeilding an even higher quality copy on a better brand.
