Marantz cdr 631 pro- won't work with kodak cdr's? more inside....

I bought a marantz cdr 631 pro a few days ago. I have already made 15 cdr's on 'verbatim' brand 80 minute blanks. These all came out perfectly and are playable on my linn ikemi and rotel cdp's without any problem.

I also picked up 20 kodak cdr ultima 74 minute cdr's. For some strange reason the 3 (from two separate batches/boxes) kodaks do not complete the 'finalizing' process and are useless. Neither the ikemi nor the rotel can read them at all.

After these 3 kodak failures I just tried another of the verbatim's and it finalized just fine, and is readable/playable on the ikemi and rotel. No problems at all with the verbatims.

I am brand spankin' new to this world of cd recording and am wondering : 1) Does this mean that my particular cdrecorder is just incompatible with those particular kodak blanks? 2) Is it that it can only burn 80 minute blanks and not 74 minute ones? (the verbatims are 80 and kodak 74) 3) is it possible that the problem is only with these particular batches of kodaks? (I find this unlikely as I bought 2 different boxes of 10 each)

I will try to pick up a blank cdr of several available brands to test which do or don't work. I realize now that I should have done this with the kodak ultimas before buying 20 at once but from everything I read on the net it seemed that if anything; i'd have been more likely to encounter problems with the verbatims.

Any help here would be most appreciated. Thank you.

p.s.- The marantz has a 'make cd' feature which means that all I do is start the source once the cdr has initialized and the recorder burns it and then finalizes it automatically. would finalizing manually change anything? (I don't think it should because the auto finalize has worked just fine with the verbatim's)
