Marantz CD5001

My Pioneer Elite PD-65 finally died. It had been giving me trouble with staying shut for some time now, but now no matter what I do, the CD drawer always opens on its own. So my wife begins a Christmas quest to replace this CD player for me. She finds the Marantz CD-5001 at our local hi fi shop for $230. Well, let me tell you, I am amazed at how much better this thing sounds than the $800 Pioneer. Granted, the Pioneer was from 1996, but it is hard to believe you can get this much performance at this price level. The list for the Marantz was $330, so she got a really good deal. I have not been in the market for a new CD player for years.

The sound is detailed, but not overly so, and very listenable.

Is this typical of CD Players today or is this Marantz a little gem at this price point?
