Marantz 54

I think you can do a lot better than your Marantz. I have a Marantz 53 gathering dust because of its sound, and it's difficult to believe that the 54 was a quantum step up from that. I also have a Marantz DR700 CD recorder that doesn't have the playback quality that several other of my players do.

My preference is Arcam. There were several good used Arcams at Audiogon this morning. I also have a Creek CD 60 that is excellent. Audiogon had a Heart 6000, a tube machine that has gotten high marks. I believe it's adapted from a Marantz chassis. There was also a Jolida JD-601a, which is supposed to sound good but some research might be warranted about it's reliability. There was a very good deal on an Arcam 73T way back in the Audiogon listings. I have an Arcam 7 that runs circles around either Marantz and the 73 is supposed to be even better. Jeff's Sound Values also had a good deal on an Arcam 72.

My point is that for $500 you can definitely do better than your Marantz. I'm not sure about that in the new market, although there is a chance. But in the used market you can take a step, or more, up.

Good luck.
