Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

what is a step up from 12 year old cdp?

I've been reading the archives to learn about new and used cdp and DAC choices. While something like a Benchmark DAC1 sounds like a great choice, I'm trying to figure out how big a step I need to take (in $) to see a nice improvement over my faithful but 12 year old Marantz CD-54. Would something inexpensive like a Pioneer Elite 45a blow away my old cdp? How about a Channel Island DAC with upgraded power supply? What else might you suggest in the $500 and below range (I have a good sense of the choices above $500 from the archive).

I generally like the sound of my current system but find I get some grain on voices and some harsh highs at times. I just upgraded my cables (without going nuts on $ -- VH Audio Cryo Pulsar ICs and DH Labs Q10 biwire) and the jump in detail, sound stage, and timbre is wonderful. So there is the impetus for the look at the cdp too... wondering if I can take another big step by improving the source. The remainder of the system is Macintosh MC122 amp, Mac MX118 pre, Tannoy 605 speakers.

Thanks!
