...the Toshiba 3950 (or 3960) at around $50 new plus another $30 in parts to do the basic Auricap upgrade described in the 'Swenson mod's' (do a search). It performed, sonically, at the up to $1,000 level for musicality and detail, in my opinion.
I've heard the Playstation being discussed. I didn't hear any magic but it was OK playback for the price. You never know on these 'giant killer' discoveries.
