I have a vintage Eico tube amp (HF-81) which has quite variety of input options. Among these are low level inputs for microphone (high impedance) and tape head (with eq).
I was wondering if I could bypass the op amps on my phillips cd player and feed directly into one of the low input's. The op amp on my phillips cd player is an LM 833. I've actually tried a preliminary experiment by running leads from the op amp inputs to the mic. input on the amp. The sound is good and very musical, but the signal to noise ratio is not too good and I am getting a lot of hum and backround hiss. I suspect is I used a shielded cable that the hum would be reduced. I also experimented with the tape head input but got a lot of distortion.Any thoughts on whether this might be a practical approach? And if so, what might I need to do to optimise?
Thanks in advance for any advice offered.
