Now that the version 2.0 is out, I've got to think a lot of Ack! DAC's (version 1) will be showing up on the used market, and for less even than you've budgeted.I can't imagine that wouldn't sound better than most CD players at the same price, but then I haven't personally heard the alternatives--just relying on what I've read here.
