Where the heck were all you guys last month during the "Tin Foil Wars" last month?Dunno. Which forum was it in? This one? If so, I wasn't here because I don't frequent this forum. Only reason I'm posting on this one is because DeafEar posted on Tweaker's Asylum pointing to his post here, soliciting comments.
I was taking the "alum won't deplete a static charge from an aluminum, glass, plastic disk and if it did it would pick the charge right back up from rotation and frictional charging position"
I don't see how aluminum foil could equalize the static charge on a CD unless the foil somehow happened to have a charge opposite that which was on the CD. The foil would have a neutral charge. If the CD were positively charged, it could suck some electrons off the foil but then the foil would be left with a positive static charge and you're right back where you started.
Seems like some other posters under this topic agree that it may be a stretch to observe that demagnetizing a non magnetic disk has some affect on sound quality.
Aluminum is magnetic. Specifically it's paramagnetic. Which means that it magnetizes in the presence of an external magnetic field. But in the absence of such a magnetic field, it retains no residual magnetization the way ferromagnetic materials do so there's nothing to demagnetize.
However as Furutech points out, the inks used for printing on CDs can contain iron oxides. However I don't know where they'd end up being exposed to static magnetic fields in order to magnetize them to any degree in the first place unless you were storing your CDs on the fridge using permanent magnets. :)
I was in a fight with a Parasound Design Engineer who's only contribution was to convince me that I'll die before I ever spend a dollar of mine on Parasound equipment. He never explained why it might work only that I was "book taught" and couldn't understand such things.
Been there. Done that. Got the t-shirt. Matter of fact, I've dozens of 'em. Need some extras? :)
