Thanks for your reply Jon,I rather fancied that the demagnetization thing was a red herring. With simple logic, I reasoned that if a magnetized CD could affect playback, then a powerful magnet placed near my CDP would make an audible difference. I tried one in many locations and couldn't hear a thing.
