No offense, but this is a $59 machine (the one I still have; the first one is back at Best Buy), I don't own a Variac, and I'm perfectly happy with my tweaked 3950. I junked the second 3980. BTW, I still prefer listening to the 3950 rather than to my Sony XA777ES (on Redbook discs, of course).
