Dave,
I have similar problems with earlier generation DVD chips that just ran too hot. The cost of the units did not allow for a heatsink and during the viewing of a long movie, the unit my freeze up. My Toshiba does this once in a while with DVD Video but never with CDs. I would suggest you get yourself a little heatsink that fits on top of the main processing chip and mount it on top with some heatsink compound as an experiment. If the problems go away, you can make the connection permanent by adding a little "superglue" to attach the heatsink and dispense with the heatsink compound...just use a little toothpick size dab and the heatsink can be removed by prying it off thin small screwdriver...the idea is to lose a little sand/silicon and not crack the chip. Tell me how it works out.PeAk
