I did set the speakers to large and deactivated the decompression feature. I also set the digital output to pcm.
That said, I couldn't get the settings to change to 5 channels when I briefly tried it as a DVD player in my cheapo video system.
Maybe I got a bad one.
However, I did mainly use it as a transport, as my transport in my 2nd system recently broke, which is what prompted me to buy the Toshiba.
As a transport, it sounded a lot like it did as a cd player. I would think that the settings you mention would not affect its digital output.
