Did you access and reconfigure the system Setup features?As shipped the 4960 rolls off the bass below 70hz to the left and right channels for use with the 5.1's subwoofer channel.
The dynamic compression feature may also be activated. Did you check the menu?
Both of these features if not actively changed may have contibuted to the sound you describe.
