Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

A different opinion

I bought one for $60 but it only came with a 10 day money back. And back it went.
I agree it has excellent clarity, resolution and soundstaging, especially for $60.
But the tonal balance was not to my liking. Light in the bass, lean in the midrange, some glare here and there. At times the combination of lean sound and lots of detail was a bit overwhelming and not enjoyable. I even tried the warmest, dullest interconnects I had in the house but even they didn't work. But sometimes it was interesting. This was in my 2nd system which consists of an NAD receiver driving Spendor S3/5's which is a lush, warm combination. Also cross checked using Grado RS-2 headphones. Dac is a Micromega Duo BS2.
I bought it mainly to use as a transport but tried it as a cd player. My comments apply to both applications.
It will be interesting to hear your comments about the Pioneer player.
I was about to buy one of those to try, when I found a few spare cd transports in my closet which I think I'll use for awhile.
You get what you pay for with the Toshiba, but a giant killer, I am afraid not, at least not in my opinion.
