I auditioned a MF A3/24 DAC with a Sony DVP-S9000es as a transport using both RCA & Toslink connections in my home. I was very impressed with the improvement in sound in all aspects. Better bass response (tighter), smoother highs, much better sound stage with bloom around individual instruments (which is my main complaint with the Sony's performance) and a lot less grain. I listened to a variety of music and recall hearing things I did not knew existed in on some of the recordings. I listened to the new DVD of "The Last Waltz" pumped through the DAC and was able to go back and forth to the CD transport versus the DAC and the difference was always clear with the MF making better music.
I preferred the DAC with the transport on the 96k setting versus the 192k. It seemed to compress dynamics in the 192k setting somewhat.
Another positive the DAC provided me was higher output, in my system this was a blessing as I am using a Pass Aleph 3 (30 watts single ended) amp.
This will be my next purchase when I can ride out the recession.
There are many excellent CD front-end solutions, however; I think a DAC is better solution, as many transports seem to die right after the warranty expires. DACs have no moving parts and therefore are not subject to the vibration and noise associated with machines with moving parts.
If you can I highly recommend auditioning equipment at home if at all possible.
Enjoy the music!
