I've been in the market to upgrade my CDP or get a DAC just as you are. I A/B'd the MF with an AMC 6b tubed CDP. The highly touted MF didn't sound any better then the AMC. In fact, the AMC sounded great. But, AMC has a reputation for very poor reliability. I also heard the Jolida JD100A CDP...very fine sounding. But, reliability is also up in the air as well. Up to $2K the best sounding digital I heard was the Bel Canto DAC2, but not by any large margin. After all this research, belive it or not, I just ordered the CI Audio VDA-1 DAC/VAC-1 P/S with a PS Audio xStream digitial cable ($200 retail) bundled with this package for the price of the digital hardware alone. The sound is comparable with anything up to at least $1500, and it's costing me just over $500 complete. In fact, there really isn't any significant sonic improvement in digital hardware unless you get over the $3K to $4K range, i.e. the 24/192 version of the Electrocompaniet CDP or DAC, Cary 306/200, etc...
