Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Terminological confusion

One last comment on l'affaire Perpetuel, and I'm
done.

It seems to me that Audio Alchemy and Perpetual Tech
have caused themselves endless grief and engendered
endless confusion by using that damned word
"interpolation". This confusion is further compounded
by the fact that the P-1A can, in fact, function
as an upsampler (when the CS8420 SRC is engaged),
and when it is, "interpolation" (in the usual sense
of the word) is, in fact, also taking place.

However, the thing that Perpetual (and Audio Alchemy before
them) call "resolution enhancement" does not necessarily
involve "interpolating" new output samples at intermediate
values between the input samples. In fact, the old
DTI Pro and DTI Pro 32 took in data at 44.1 kHz, and
output data at 44.1 kHz. There was no change in sampling
rate.

AA and P Tech would've been better off calling the
addition of extra bits to the 16-bit input samples
"extrapolation" rather than "interpolation". The usual
sense of the word extrapolation, I think, better
fits the process of "modelling" or "estimating"
what the lower 8 bits of a full 24-bit sample would've
contained had the original mastering A-to-D converter
been digitizing at that higher resolution.

I still say it sounds **great**, BTW.
