Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

My experience.... Sort of Long

My impressions with the Ah!4000 -- An excellent value for the money, but I would not consider it a super bargain -- I would say it is fair priced period! No more , no Less

As usual you need to build that matching synergy between components, so do not take for granted that everything will sound better from top to bottom with the AH! 4000.

I did purchase the Upsampler, but currently have the stock 6922's. Hopefully this will be the area that will change everything (that's the good thing about this pieece of gear, it can be tailored)

Some things to point out in my experience:

1) I have lost a little bit of highs and extension, whereas before (heavily modded Old Sony ES333 with AD opamps) had plenty, sometimes too much at high volumes. With the AH! 4000 I'm missing in the high dept. and high freq. extension. hopefully that will change with tube upgrade.

2) Substantial gain in the bass dept. but still missing mid bass timing (No wonder... my 555II Adcom will be upgraded next, this will be interesting with new AVA 350 EXR). My REL strata sub performs better too.

3) Good but not substantial gain in detail and resolution. Again the tubes need upgrade and my room needs acoustic treatment period!

4) Same or maybe even a loss of wide soundtage. Perception of Soundstage Depth is the same OK.

5) Vocals now seem more warm/recessed vs. before they were forward in your face with the Sony -- warm is is O.K. with me.

6) Now almost every CD sounds good compared to the previous Sony player. I used to favor playing some CD's over others -- Wow! now even Jimmy Buffet Greatest Hits $7.99 Super value CD sounds good!

7)Have lost some transient dynamics compared to the old Sony (snares, percussion etc,) everything seems more even now and do not have to adjust volume as much -- this allows me to set and leave alone to listen music.

8) I miss the remote volume (direct Amp connection). The AH 4000 resolution is not the best when using the lower remote volumes. This forced me to build a Sowter passive attenuator which works excellent. And yes I did compare to the Sony regardless of direct or via Sowter connection.

These are my initial mpressions after using the Ah 4000 for a few months. Happy with it? -- You bet! but not perfect, at least not yet...

YMMV.

Happy listening
