Rkeman has tried more , so far running direct is the purest. The few pre’s I’ve tried did more harm than good and I’m happier with Neds' tweak .

Re - getting better dynamics via an external preamp

I wonder if DAC output gain or power supply wasn’t strong enough or the output signal somehow gets degraded in their systems. I’m not sure if this is related, but ran a passive for about a year and was told any cdp with the proper output voltage will work, but the one with a bigger power supply will yield better dynamics. I also experimented with several actives and have only found one that I can say truly improves upon the original signal without altering it. It still doesn’t make sense to me how adding something to the chain can be more pure, but was told it has something to do with removing additional noise.
