There is no "direct" out on the DAC one. You are going through exactly the same circuitry whether you use the front volume control or not. The "bypass" mode uses exactly the same type of pot as the one used for the front panel volume control. The only difference being that the controls for the "fixed" output are set via a screw while the front volume control uses a nob. The only actual electrical difference between the 2 is that the circuit traces for the trim pots follow a slightly different route than those of the front volume pots.
