The death of Legato Link had nothing to do with any technical inferiority. My understanding is that after Wadia patented the application of a spline interpolation algorithm in a digital filter (i.e. "DigiMaster"), Pioneer dropped their own Legato Link filter rather than pay royalties to Wadia. JVC did the same (their near-legendary XL-Z1050TN also employed a spline interpolation filter). This begs the question why didn't the Japanese companies patent the technology themselves before Wadia. I can only speculate that they felt that the use of splines did not pass the sniff test for "non-obviousness", therefore they thought there was not point to patent its use in a digital filter. Who knows for sure?
