Re: How good is the Pioneer "Ligato" DAC chip

The Legato chip was okay in it's time, but not as good as they suggested 'developed using Wadia technology'. It was soft in the upper registers but quite smooth if a little polite in the midrange.
It appeared a generation after the first Stable Platter Mechanism players and was Pioneer's attempt at cornering the mid-price CD player market in the mid-90's. The Legato Link chip failed to set the audiophile world on fire by and large, although they did still have some success with their players for another generation or two. It's likely the stable platter mechanism was for the most part responisble for the continued interest.

Modern day DACs added to such mechanisms are well worth the experiment.
