RE: so old and tiring a controversy... yet let's try once again...

As a Cable Guy, the notion of even the most respectable audiophile USB cable negating the use of a USB to S/PDIF converter for whatever reason that type of device might be desirable for an individual to implement is not something I would concur with. The audible benefits of of a particular USB cable has nothing to do with the matter in question. It may improve the subjective performance level of the signal chain between the USB devices, but that is a different issue than the conversion of formats. High-performance audiophile cables are not magic makers in this case, so if one wants/needs to convert USB to S/PDIF for whatever reason, the sound quality of the USB cable won't negate the use of such a device. I think you would agree that using higher performance parts/components within the signal chain tends to be mutually exclusive unless there are matters of improved synergy, or a notable technical relationship between the various parts/components within the signal path, gusser.
