I would have to disagree. I am a dealer for Audio Aero, BAT and the distributor for EMM Labs. I have had numerous Wadia trade-ins. The Wadia is a nice player, but has a hi-fi sound. It is a bit thin and the volume control is useless. They are certainly among the top in build quality. As far as your statement of the 2k cost for upgrades, that is just ridiculous. Every one of my customers that received the upgrades, never had to pay a cent. The distributor of Audio Aero, Globe Audio, is a class operation. They stand behind an excellent product that had gone through growing pains, but has not had problems since the last revision. If you heard this from an actual Audio Aero owner that purchased a unit that was not "gray market", I would be very suprised.
Have you listened to the Audio Aero run direct in a system you were familiar with? There are very few reports of any preamp bettering the direct operation of the Capitole. I have had customers that have traded in or sold their:
BAT VK-50SE
Aesthetix Callisto Signature MK II
CJ Art II
LAMM L2 Reference
Tom Evans The Vibe
ARC Ref 2 MK II
Edge Signature One
CTC BlowtorchThese represent just a few of the preamps I have taken in or the customer sold only after the customer had a chance to listen with and without their preamp. All of these preamps are excellent, but with the Audio Aero running direct, there is a level of transparency that is lost when using an outboard preamp.
