in a well setup system and its an excellent player ...It leans towards the atmospheric side of natural ... making punchier players seem a bit more exciting (esp to the uninitiated) at first listen but ultimatly these punchier players sound far less natural and are more prone to fatigue in the long run.
The capitoles dynamic capability is trully excellent with much less leading edge punch but far more natural impact than many expensive players.
But its best feature (IMO one that defines the top grade players from the rest) is its uncanny ability to take away veils of low level noise (fog) and allow one to hear much much deeper into the music at the same token - have the ability to play at the highest gain without comression.
Depth is beyond what most cd players can achieve, and the soundstage sounds 'real' - although not quite as percise and liquid/natural as the cd12.
Not heard the 861, have heard the 21, but i think the capitole is truly in the upper echelon of current redbook reproduction.
If your system already possesses a very low noise floor (which increases dynamic range considerably), and you favor a more relaxed (but powerfull) presentation with considerable depth capability and clarity - the capitole may be the perfect match.
Easily one of the best i have heard - at any price point.
