As a new owner of an 860x, my comments may have some relevance. The 861 adds (among other things) switchable filters (though almost everyone likes the default Wadia setting), and new DACs (I think). The cost of upgrading my 860x to an 861 is about $1500. So in Wadia terms, it can't be that much! I have heard that the 860x offers a sound which is a tad more laid back, still highly resolving, just not as resolving as the 861.I spoke with the Wadia folks some time ago, and the SE upgrade is a transport upgrade - it incorporates some of the features that the Teac P-0 uses. They told me it makes a very substantial difference. But, when we are talking about the best cd players in the world, "substantial" has a very different meaning.
My 860x is the first CD player which I would characterize as extremely detailed. Not overly detailed, or etched, but compared with my high-end Sonic Frontiers gear (An SFD 2 MK III 24/96 with I2E link) it is a VERY different sound. I generally like laid back sound, enough detail so I get what is there, but as a tube person, I've never been a detail freak. All of this said, I love my Wadia. It is amazing, they deserve the mystique that they have.
As I remember there was a discussion of the Capitole on Audiogon, and many people were a bit disappointed (including one who sold an 860) you might want to check there.
Also, there are a couple of 861's used at audiogon which are great deals - unless you REALLY want a warranty.
That said, I say - Wadia, wadia, wadia wadia.
And since I'm a vinyl person who needs a preamp, I found another use for the digital volume control. I plugged my Stax 007t amp into the unbalanced outputs and now have a remote for my Stax Omegas. I love sonic bliss. I love it enough that it could be the end of me - savings wise that is ;)
