I have auditioned, and did not care for, the 390S/383 combination. I was underwhelmed, like you. I have had far better results running the 390S directly into a 27 or 27.5 (two of the best amps ever produced by ML), and using the volume control in the 390S. The 390S is a fine piece of equipment and I dont think is your problem.
